Proposal for developers’ contributions to social housing welcome – McCann

3 June, 2014 - by Fra McCann

Sinn Féin MLA Fra McCann has welcomed a proposal which would require private developers to make contributions towards social housing projects.

The West Belfast MLA said;

"This is a welcome first step towards acquiring additional social housing.

"Sinn Féin has raised this issue repeatedly over recent years.

“I believe that opportunities have been lost because the Department of Social Development has not been proactive in pursuing a similar policy.

“Over the past decade thousands of additional social houses could have been built as private developments increased across the North.

"While it will not deal the huge waiting lists for social housing on its own, it will at least bring additional social houses which would end the homelessness nightmare of some of those on waiting lists."
