A 32-county approach to agriculture is the way forward – Martin Ferris TD

Sinn Féin’s agriculture team met today in Dublin. Michelle O’Neill MLA, Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development and Martin Ferris TD, the party’s Agriculture spokesperson in the Dáil discussed the Common Agriculture Policy, the strengthened Sinn Féin representation at European Union level with the election of four MEPs and the future of the fishing industry.

Speaking after the meeting, Deputy Ferris said:

“We look forward to a stronger voice in the EU now that we have an all-Ireland representation there.

“A 32-county approach to the development of the agri-food industry, the protection of the family farm and defence of Ireland’s fisheries is essential.

“The Irish food brand is famous worldwide for being unique and of high quality. There is no mileage is competing with each other North and South, when there is a market there for everyone to pursue and which can be marketed as an Irish brand.

“We also discussed problems in the beef sector, specifically the issue of nomadic cattle. Myself and Minister O’Neill will seek meetings with the beef companies to discuss this problem.”
