Sinn Féin seeks protection of local jobs

29 September, 2004

Sinn Féin MLA Michael Ferguson met with Coca Cola Boss John Barrett at the Lambeg site this morning to discuss the long-term impact of Coca Cola's decision to make a major investment in a new site, consequently signalling the end of production on the Lambeg site.

Michael Ferguson was keen to make a case to secure local jobs with the minimum disruption. It was nevertheless clear that Coca Cola's Business Case required them in order to meet the needs of an All Ireland Market demand to end production on the Lambeg site in two years time. Commenting upon this morning's meeting Michael Ferguson said,

"I welcomed the Company's Open Communication Policy because transparency is crucial for the current work force.

"The Company has outlined a criteria for its new capital investment programme and I proposed an alternative local site at Springvale that would secure the local mixed workforce and offer the infrastructural requirements to support the new business plan.

"I will be in contact with INI and DETI's Minister Barry Gardiner on the matter." ENDS
