Deputy Mayor to meet with Victims Families

29 September, 2004

The Deputy Mayor of Belfast Sinn Féin councillor Joe O'Donnell will take part in a series of meetings with victims groups across the city in the coming weeks. This evening Councillor O'Donnell will be meeting with victims group An Fhirinne and victims of British State Sponsored murder from the Short Strand area.

Cllr. O'Donnell said:

"This meeting will be the start of a process whereby the families of the victims of collusion can hopefully take ownership of the An Fhirinne campaign for the truth about the deaths of their loved ones. The Short Strand like many other nationalist areas in Belfast suffered for many years as a result of the British Government policy of directing and controlling unionist death squads.

"I will listen to the families air their hopes and concerns regarding the ongoing campaign and to garner further support for forthcoming lobbying efforts in Stormont, Leinster House and Brussels.

"As Deputy Mayor I feel that is important that the people of Belfast throw their weight behind the families as a necessary part of the healing and conflict resolution process." ENDS
