No room for racism or sectarianism - McCann

23 June, 2014 - by Jennifer McCann

Sinn Féin MLA and Junior Minister Jennifer McCann has said there can be no room for racism or sectarianism in society.

Speaking after the Polish Consul urged members of the Polish community in the North to be vigilant Jennifer McCann said:

"In the past at this time of year there have been attacks on various cultures with flags, including the Polish flag, burned on bonfires.

"Unfortunately we have also seen physical attacks on members of the Polish community which, like this most recent attack on the Lagan Towpath, must be condemned.

"The comments from the Polish Consul, Jerome Mullen, are a sad reminder that there are still narrow-minded people in our society who engage in sectarian abuse of our Polish community.

"Sectarianism, like racism, must be condemned in all its forms.

"Everyone has the right to live in peace, free from fear of attack and intimidation.

"Sinn Féin has been to the fore in opposing such attacks and in showing solidarity with ethnic minority communities and foreign nationals.

"The Racial Equality Strategy which has now gone out for public consultation is designed to create a welcoming, inclusive society where no one is intimidated because of where they come from.
