Agreed strategy needed to take agri food industry forward

26 June, 2014 - by Oliver McMullan

Sinn Féin Agriculture Spokesperson Oliver McMullan has said all those involved in food production need to work together to maximise the potential of the agri food sector.

 Mr McMullan stated,

“I welcome Minister Michelle O'Neill's remarks at last night’s Retail Consortium Assembly held at Stormont in which she called on all food producers to work closer together.

“At the reception, which was attended by key representatives of the retail sector, political parties and local producers the minister outlined how all links within the food chain are dependent on each other.

“It’s clear that we need to develop an agreed strategy to ensure long-term sustainability for all elements of the food chain.

“The agri food sector is one of the fastest growing sectors in the North and we need to maximise its potential by getting agreement between farmers, processors and retailers.

“Central to this is that farmers and growers achieve a fair price for their produce.

“This is a central plank of creating a sustainable industry which can create employment within what is the fastest growing industry in the North.” ENDS/CRÍOCH
