Minister and Acting Commissioner should appear before Justice Committee on latest reports of penalty point abuses
Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Padraig Mac Lochlainn has called on Minister Frances Fitzgerald and Acting Garda Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan to appear before the Oireachtas Justice Committee as soon as possible to discuss the reports of continued abuse of the penalty points system and the implementation of the Garda Inspectorate report.
Speaking today Deputy Mac Lochlainn confirmed that he has written to the chairperson Justice Committee to request that the Minister and the Acting Commissioner be invited to attend the committee.
“Reports this week that abuses of the penalty points system are continuing are very worrying particularly as we were led to believe that measures were put in place to put a stop to them.
“The reports would seem to suggest that the recommendations of the Garda Inspectorate have not been implemented.
“I have therefore written to the Chairperson of the Justice Committee to request that both Minister Fitzgerald and Acting Commissioner O’Sullivan would be invited to attend the committee to discuss these reports and the implementation of the Garda Inspectorate report.
“I hope my request will be granted and that the Minister and the Acting Commissioner will take the opportunity to come in and address the members of the committee.”
