Ireland has nothing to fear from tax transparency - Pearse Doherty TD

16 September, 2014 - by Pearse Doherty TD

Sinn Féin Finance Spokesperson Pearse Doherty TD has said Ireland has nothing to fear from OECD moves on tax transparency and should fully engage in the process.

Deputy Doherty said:

“Ireland has nothing to fear from the move towards international tax transparency. The world is moving towards a more transparent global tax environment and Ireland should not be seen in any way to be reluctant passengers in that journey and rather should be an agent for delivering tax transparency. It was on Sinn Féin’s initiative that the Oireachtas Finance Committee established a sub-committee on Global Taxation to look at the issues raised by hearings in the USA in particular which singled out Ireland as being a facilitator of tax evasion.

"Sinn Fein, in our submission, to the Department of Finance’s consultation on the OECD project said that we do not believe in taking a head in the sand approach to the changing trends and developments in international taxation. That should be the attitude of all Irish parties going forward.

"As our country tries to find a sustainable recovery we must develop a healthier reputation as a transparent place to pay tax and face up to any changes necessary to create transparent global tax system where multinationals cannot escape their duties to countries including developing countries.

T"here is no party more committed to protecting Irish tax sovereignty than Sinn Féin. The OECD report does not touch on Irish sovereignty.

"We welcome the ongoing OCED BEPS project as a move towards a better way of all countries cooperating and competing on a fair basis.”
