Boylan condemns European Commission move to prioritise competitiveness over health
There has been widespread shock and opposition voiced against the European Commissions plans to move the portfolio for medicinal products and health technologies from the Commissioner in charge of Health to the Commissioner in charge of internal market and industry within the new Commission.
Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan was among those condemning the move saying that “the Commission has put business concerns above concerns for citizens health.
Twenty eight separate health organizations, from across Europe, have signed a letter to President of The European Commission Jean Claude Juncker expressing their concern over the decision.
In support of their concern Lynn Boylan stated “The EU should be most concerned with protecting and promoting patient health and safety. The signal sent out from the Commission is that competitiveness takes priority over health which is simply unacceptable.
It is not the role of The Commissioner for Industry and Internal Market to prioritize what is best for the health and wellbeing of patients.”
