Time to lower the voting age - Fearon
Sinn Fein MLA Megan Fearon has reiterated the call for 16 year-olds to be allowed to vote.
Speaking ahead of an Assembly debate on lowering the voting age, the Newry and Armagh MLA said;
"Sinn Féin has been calling for some time now to have the voting age lowered to 16.
"The Scottish referendum was an example of how young people want to be directly involved in decisions that effect their future.
"I welcome the calls from Alex Salmond and others to allow 16 and 17 year-olds to vote.
"We can no longer send out contradictory messages that we want to build a better future for our young people yet we don't want them to be part of legislating for that future.
"Full participation in the democratic process including the right to vote is essential for young peoples voices not only to be heard but also to be listened to.
"Giving young people the vote at 16 will encourage more of them to become directly involved in the political process thus benefiting wider society."
