Roads Service must implement Residents Only Parking Scheme - Cllr Hargey

25 September, 2014

Councillor Deirdre Hargey has called on Roads Service and DRD to revisit and implement a Residents Only Parking Scheme for the Market area in South Belfast.

This renewed call comes after residents protested on Wednesday morning to highlight the issue once again.

"On Wednesday morning residents in the Market area staged a four hour protest to highlight the ongoing issue of commuter parking in local streets.

"Residents feel that DRD and Roads Service have not taken their concerns on board and are increasingly concerned about access for emergency vehicles and the potential for accidents.

"I live in the area and see the problem every day and have observed how it has gotten worse with commuters now parking two and three cars deep on pavements.

"In March this year I met with Roads Service and requested that they revisit the idea of introducing a pilot scheme in conjunction with local residents. To date no progress has been made on this.

"While Roads Service did not progress with a Residents Parking Scheme some years ago I feel it is now time that they revisit this idea with a dregree of urgency. It is clear that the problem is not going to disappear and there is a responsibility on DRD to work with local communities to find creative solutions to issues which affect their every day lives."
