People of South Leitrim and Roscommon should send a clear message to failed Government Parties - Matt Carthy MEP

26 September, 2014 - by Matt Carthy MEP

Speaking today from Co Roscommon, where he has accompanied by election candidate for Roscommon South Leitrim Martin Kenny on the campaign trail, Sinn Féin MEP Matt Carthy said:

“It is clear from our engagements today that the people in this area feel hugely let down by the failure of successive Governments to tackle the issues affecting this region.

“Having spent a portion of my childhood here as a young boy and from listening to the stories of countless locals, I can tell you that for many of the people of Roscommon and South Leitrim little has changed from the 80s and 90s to the present day as countless parents tell of their heartbreak of watching their child emigrate as they themselves had to.

“The people of this area have watched as the economy of the country boomed during the celtic tiger era all the while wondering when they were going to receive their fair share. They felt the impact of the lack of proper representation and the corruption as it became apparent that, for ordinary families across these two counties, the day was not going to come when they received their fair share of the wealth created.

“The economic collapse brought on by Fianna Fáil’s gross mismanagement of the economy has been devastating for this region.  In almost every town in the constituency, people have had to watch local shops, pubs and businesses close as they are forced to pay new charges and taxes to cover the cost of the party they weren’t invited to.

“It is clear from talking to the people of this constituency, young and old, that the established parties have been happy to allow this area to be left behind - they are out of touch with the needs of the people and they have nothing new to offer.

“The voters in this region sent a clear message in the European Elections this year when they firmly rejected the old politics of Fianna Fáil and I urge them to do the same in this by election. Martin Kenny, as part of a growing party committed to achieving a real republic based on fairness, accountability and equality of opportunity, is the only candidate in a position to deliver real change for this constituency and ensure the voice of the people of this area is heard.”
