Relief at Frack Free Decision

1 October, 2014 - by Michelle Gildernew

Sinn Féin MP for Fermanagh South Tyrone, Michelle Gildernew has welcomed the termination of Tamboran’s licence to drill in Co Fermanagh.

Sinn Féin MP Michelle Gildernew, speaking after the decision was announced said"

“Tamboran was granted a petroleum licence in 2011 and had three years to inform the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment (DETI) on its decision to drill or drop their plans.

“Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster has said the licence had been terminated as the deadline passed yesterday.

“I am delighted Tamboran’s licence has been terminated. People in Fermanagh have been concerned from the outset of this project that ‘fracking’ for shale gas was the intended outcome.

“Fracking had the potential to destroy this county, its agriculture, its tourism and its people’s health.

“Fracking was never in the interest of the people of Fermanagh or indeed the island of Ireland and the local community will be delighted the licence has expired.

“Sinn Féin has been to the fore in opposing fracking right across Ireland and I visited the protest site at Belcoo several times to show my support.

“I sincerely hope that the issue of fracking in Fermanagh is now over but, Sinn Féin will continue to fundamentally oppose it right across the island.” ENDS/CRÍOCH
