Seanad should be representative of whole Irish nation - Cllr Catherine Seeley

1 October, 2014

Sinn Féin Seanad candidate Catherine Seeley has called on Oireachtas members to support her bid to become a Senator.

Speaking today Councillor Seeley said;

“The Seanad is not in the gift of the government and should be representative of the whole Irish nation.

“The actions of the Taoiseach, with the unquestioning support of Labour has been to abuse the public appointments system, in order to place their man in the Seanad.

“It is clear that they view the Seanad election not as an opportunity to strengthen and diversify the Seanad but an opportunity for political patronage and more of the same.

“It is clear that the present Seanad is mostly made up of middle aged, middle class, men.

“I would hope that my election would allow for me to bring my experience to bear on the issues facing the nations from the perspective of a young woman, an educator and an Irish citizen born and raised in the North.

“In the Seanad I would hope to join the Sinn Féin team and promote our visions of a new republican and to forward understanding and reconciliation.”
