Sinn Féin calls for Dáil debate on free trade agreement – Senator David Cullinane
Sinn Féin Senator David Cullinane has called on the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise, and Innovation to commit to a debate in both Houses of the Oireachtas on the European Free Trade Agreement.
Referring to Columbia as a serial human rights abuser, Senator Cullinane said:
“The FTA has human rights provision but they are not, and will not be enforced. One need look no further than Israel.
“I am asking the Minister to give a commitment that he will bring the FTA Agreement before both Houses so that the issue can be debated and voted on in both the Seanad and Dáil.
“Members want to make a contribution to the debate and others need to be fully informed of what this Agreement entails, and I believe the Minister needs to afford the Houses of the Oireachtas that privilege.
“Despite formal talks on peace and land reform in Colombia, more than 70 human rights defenders were murdered there last year alone.
“Colombia remains one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a trade unionist.
“We cannot ignore this violation of human rights. The Minister must allow the Oireachtas to debate and vote on this very important trade agreement”.
