Vote against Israeli reparations questioned by Senator Reilly
Sinn Féin Senator Kathryn Reilly today asked why MEP Brian Hayes voted against a resolution which demanded reparation from Israel for EU projects destroyed during recent aggression in Gaza. Senator Reilly put the question to Brian Hayes today at the EU Affairs Committee.
Senator Reilly stated:
“Israel's offensive on Gaza has caused over $5 billion of damage. The EU has repeatedly funded infrastructure that Israel has subsequently destroyed during the past three Israeli operations in the Gaza strip.
“In light of the responsibility Irish MEPs hold to protect and defend the use of Irish taxpayers’ money at EU level, is it not right that Israel pays monetary compensation in the redevelopment of the Gaza strip?
“Is it not proper that all Irish MEPs demand at EU level, that Israel be made accountable for the destruction of EU funded infrastructure funded for by Irish taxpayers?
“I hoped that today MEP Brian Hayes might elaborate on his reasons for voting against the recent EU resolution which demanded reparation from Israel for the EU funded projects destroyed during the repeated aggression in Gaza and the West Bank.
Senator Reilly added:
“It's a twisted situation where Israel is continuously allowed to obliterate EU funded infrastructure with impunity, but be held accountable for none of the cost in its re-development.
