Sinn Féin councillor JJ Magee ‘appalled’ at attack on child
Sinn Féin councillor JJ Magee said today he is appalled that a seven-year-old child was injured in a stone-throwing incident at an interface on Saturday night.
The North Belfast councillor said:
“I’m shocked and appalled that a seven-year-old child has been hurt after being hit on the head with a brick at a play park on Clifton Park Avenue.
“I hope that the child makes a speedy recovery. There have been claims that the motive for the attack on this child may have been sectarian.
“Whether it was sectarian or not, it is clearly wrong. It’s madness for anyone to throw a stone at a seven-year-old in a play park.
“There has been a lot of hard work carried out by political and community leaders over recent years to lessen tensions at the interface on Clifton Park Avenue.
“Building work has also started as part of a major programme of work to regenerate the area.
“It’s vital therefore that we work together to stamp out incidents at this interface.
“I will be in contact with community workers in the area and relevant statutory bodies including the PSNI to see what more we can do to bring attacks like this to an end before some child is even more seriously injured.”
