Plan to cut dole for long-term unemployed is a race to the bottom – Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD

7 October, 2014 - by Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD

Sinn Féin Social Protection Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD has slammed any plan to cut the dole for long-term unemployed for not cooperating with new, punitive activation programmes.

Deputy Ó Snodaigh was responding to media reports that Minister Joan Burton plans to cut the dole of those who have been unemployed for a year or more if they fail comply with mandatory education and re-training schemes.

He said;

“Time and time again, rather than create quality jobs, this government have demonised the unemployed for being unemployed. “By pushing thousands of jobseekers into job displacing schemes and providing a bank of free workers to business this Labour Party Minister has succeeded in turning Ireland into a low wage economy. We now have the second highest percentage of low paying jobs in the world, second only to the United States.

“This is the outworking of JobBridge and the punitive social welfare reforms introduced by this government.

“A plan to cut the dole for the long term jobless and the government's plan to privatise social welfare services for Jobseekers will quicken this race to the bottom.”
