Gallahers job losses a devastating blow - McKay
Sinn Féin MLA for North Antrim and economy spokesperson Daithí McKay has stated that the loss of up to 800 jobs in the JTI Gallaher is a devastating blow for the local economy.
Speaking today Mr McKay said:
“The loss of almost 800 jobs in the Gallaher plant in Ballymena is a devastating blow for the local economy.
“It impacts on an area that has already suffered from closures such as the Patton group.
“Quite clearly JTI have cited the challenging economic environment across Europe, excise tax pressure coupled with illegal trade as factor as reasons for this decision.
“There is now a priority to focus on support and retraining for those will be laid off in terms.
“I will be seeking meetings with trade union representatives, Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster and the Education and Learning Minister Stephen Farry to see can an emergency package be put in place to support these workers.”
