Colreavy welcomes delay in long-wave broadcast closure
Deputy Michael Colreavy, Sinn Féin spokesperson on Communications, Energy and Natural Resources has welcomed an extended period before the RTÉ long-wave service is shut down.
Speaking on the issue Deputy Colreavy said;
“I welcome the move by RTÉ not to close their long-wave broadcasting service until January 2015.
“The announcement by RTÉ that they were closing the service has caused a considerable amount of distress for some listeners, especially older listeners in the Six Counties and among the British diaspora.
“RTÉ must ensure that this extended period of time is used to consult and advise those listeners who will be affected and guarantee that an alternative service is made available to them.
“Long-wave listenership tends to be among the older population who are not familiar with receiving broadcasts through digital radio or by online streaming.
“Alternative provisions must be found for these listeners so that they are able to enjoy all broadcasts that RTÉ has to offer.
“Engaging with our diaspora is something that we must take seriously as a country, and we should not exclude the older generation of our diaspora from this.
“It is also essential that RTÉ makes greater efforts to ensure that FM broadcasts can be received adequately throughout the 32 counties of Ireland.”
