Joint Policing Committees need more resources – Ó Clochartaigh
Sinn Féin’s Trevor Ó Clochartaigh has called on the government to create the conditions necessary to secure community confidence in policing and justice.
Speaking during a debate on Joint Policing Committees, Senator Ó Clochartaigh said;
“Sinn Féin believes we must create confidence in justice through local and democratic control, which includes civilian oversights and safeguards.
“Justice and policing are a public service and as such must be open, representative and accountable to the people they serve.
“Policing must be free from partisan political control, conform to the highest standards of human rights, accountability, and transparency.
“We also need a change of culture to one that views crime prevention through deterrence as a multi-agency matter requiring a collaborative strategic response.
“There is massive scope for introducing multi-agency crime reduction partnerships and strategies.
“Our JPC’s are invaluable but they are not nearly strong enough and this is something we need to improve.
“At present JPC’s are under-resourced, especially compared to their northern DPP counterparts.
“We need to work to strengthen, support and promote our JPC’s to ensure they are working for and with our local communities.”
