Family carers excluded from water support payment and Christmas bonus – Ó Snodaigh
Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Social Protection Aengus Ó Snodaigh challenged the Tánaiste's assertion in the Dáil this morning that the water support payment and Christmas bonus will be available to family carers. Arguing that many carers will be excluded from both these measures he called on the government to restore the €325 cut to the Respite Care Grant.
Deputy Ó Snodaigh stated:
"My party colleague Mary Lou MacDonald pressed the
Tánaiste and Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton to restore the
€325 cut that was made to the Respite Care Grant in budget 2013. The
Tánaiste replied by arguing that the new 25% Christmas bonus would be available
to carers and that she had taken pains to extend the water support payment to
carers. She argued that this was compensation for the cut to the Respite
“However the reality is that up to 20,000 family carers who were hit and continue to suffer from the cut to the Respite Care Grant will not get either the part Christmas bonus or the water support because they do not qualify for the underlying social welfare payments on which these new provisions depend.
“Sinn Féin are calling on the government to use Budget 2015 to throw family carers a lifeline and restore the €325 that was cut from the Respite Care Grant."
