Ferris calls for support of beef factory blockade
Speaking in his constituency today, Sinn Féin agriculture spokesman, Martin Ferris, TD for Kerry North, said that his party fully supports farmers’ action in blockading meat factories today and urges farmers to join the protest.
“The fact that this kind of protest has not taken place in 15 years, indicates the level of desperation of Irish beef producers,” Deputy Ferris said.
“Farmers have been getting such low prices for their beef that some are unable to even cover their costs. Meanwhile, they are looking at the price rising in Britain, where farmers are getting about €350 more per head than Irish farmers who are observing the same standards and levels of quality.
“Is it any wonder that farmers are frustrated when faced with a cartel which is keeping Irish prices down and a government which is not prepared to stand up for them.”
The protest begins at 3pm today at factories all over the state and will continue until tomorrow, Tuesday evening.
