Seasann Ní Riada le feirmeoirí i mbun agóide

27 October, 2014 - by Liadh Ní Riada MEP

Ag labhairt i gContae Chorcaí inniu gheall an Feisire Eorpach de chuid Shinn Féin Liadh Ní Riada a tacaíocht dosna feireoirí atá i mbun agóide maidir leis an praghas íseal atá ar fáil do mairteoil. Beidh feirmeoirí ag déanamh agóidí taobh amuigh de 30 monarchana feola ar fud an stáit ó 3in inniu ar feadh 24 uair a' chloig.

Dúirt Liadh Ní Riada:

“Seasann Sinn Féin go hiomlán ar taobh na feirmeoirí atá i mbun agóide inniu, agus cuirim féin in iúil mo thacaíocht don agóid seo. Is léir go bhfuil feirmeoirí i mbunc le praghasanna ísle, agus an éagothromas ollmhór idir praghasanna anseo agus sa Bhreatain. Tá teip iomlán feicthe againn i bpraghasanna com maith le laghdú in ioncam teaghlaigh feirme.

“Táimíd thar a bheith bródúil sa tír seo dár táirgí talmhaíochta. Sa bhaile maraon le thar learr cuirmíd ár mairteoil ar an margadh mar earra don caighdean is airde, ach ní ceart nó cóir bheith ag súil lenár bhfeirmeoirí caillteanas a dhéanamh.

“Cheanna féin labhair urlabhraí Shinn Féin um talmhaíochta an Teachta Martin Ferris mar gheall ar na 'cairtéil' atá i bhfeidhm isliú agus ísliú praghas mairteola. Ag an am céanna tá an rialtas lán sásta suí siar gan aon rud a dhéanamh chun an drochriocht seo a feasú.

“Tá feirmeoirí faoi bhrú ollmhór, agus níos lú airgead acu dá dteaghlaigh. Níl ach béalghrá ag teacht ón rialta, agus is léir domhsa nach bhfuil beart a dhéanamh dá réir a mbriathar acu. Feicim an easpa gnímh seo mar chuid do chlaonadh níos leaithne an rialtais agus iad ag tréige an tuath.

“Leanfaidh mise ar aghaidh ag seasamh an fód ar son phobail tuaithe sa bhaile agus san Eorap.”

Ní Riada supports protesting farmers

Speaking in Co. Cork Sinn Féin MEP for Ireland South Liadh Ní Riada expressed her support for farmers' taking action today to protest low beef prices. Farmers will assemble at 30 meat plants from 3pm today for a 24 hour protest.

Liadh Ní Riada said:

“Sinn Féin stands squarely with the farmers protesting today, and I fully support them in taking this action. Farmers are rightly frustrated with low prices, and a huge disparity between beef prices here and in Britain. They have seen prices collapse and farm incomes fall.

“We pride ourselves on our agricultural produce in this country, and at home and abroad we rightly market our beef as being of the highest quality, but farmers cannot be expected to make a loss.

“Already Sinn Féin's agriculture spokesperson Martin Ferris TD has referred to the 'cartels' that are pushing the price of beef lower and lower, while all the time the Government sits on its hands and fails to intervene.

“Farmers are under huge pressure just to make ends meet, and the Government offers nothing but lip-service. Government inaction on beef is part of a wider trend of abandoning rural Ireland.

“I will continue to stand up for rural communities across Ireland South.”
