Time for Minister to bring relief to low paid public sector workers – McDonald
Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Public Expenditure and Reform Mary Lou McDonald TD has called on Minister Howlin to outline how he proposes to bring relief to low paid public servants.
Speaking in response to the Minister’s plan to repeal section 2B of the Financial Emergency Measures in the Public Interest (FEMPI) legislation, which gave him the power to unilaterally reduce public sector pay, Deputy McDonald said:
"This move is welcome. However this coercive clause should never have been used in the first place. It is particularly disgraceful that a Labour Minister saw fit to use this to strong-arm the public sector trade unions.
"The question now is what the Minister intends to do to restore the pay of low paid public sector workers. The Minister must clarify what he intends to do to ensure that no public sector worker has to resort to Family Income Supplement payments in order to make ends meet."
