Communities shout loud and clear against water charges – Mary Lou McDonald
Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald has praised the efforts of the huge numbers of people who protested today against Irish Water.
Speaking today at the protest in Cabra, Deputy McDonald said:
“With over a hundred thousand marching in more than 90 protests all over the country, this has been a triumphant day for democracy. We have voted with our feet – water charges must be stopped.
“Bit by bit people have been sent over the edge by heavy handed austerity taxes. Water charges are the final straw.
“The protests today are not just a show of anger against epic mismanagement and a government once again failing the vulnerable. People have come out today in their hundreds and thousands because they simply cannot afford to pay these charges.
“People won't put up and shut up any longer. Today they have stood up for their rights. Communities have shouted loud and clear in powerful protests across the country.
“Sinn Féin is committed to abolishing these charges. We recognise water as a basic human right, as have the many thousands of people who have flooded the streets.
"The Government can't switch off the pressure on us so easily. We have turned up the pressure on them.
“The people have spoken and their message has been crystal clear. A resounding no to water charges.”
