Real need to develop border region - Fearon

3 November, 2014 - by Megan Fearon

Sinn Féin MLA Megan Fearon has said there is a real need to develop the border region, north and south.

Speaking after attending a meeting to discuss all-Ireland co-operation at Stormont today, the Newry and Armagh MLA said;

"I attended today's meeting with representatives of the Centre for Cross-Border Studies alongside my party colleagues Peadar Toibín TD, Phil Flanagan and Chris Hazzard.

"All the speakers agreed there is a clear need to develop the economy right across the border region.

"These are areas that have been hit hardest as a rest of a historic lack of investment, job losses and emigration.

"Border areas in particular would benefit from the promotion of an entrepreneurial spirit to kick start the local economy but those who want to set up businesses face barriers because of a lack of support.

"It is clear that Invest NI and IDA have failed the border region.

"Even a modest injection of investment would make a huge difference in these areas if the political will was there.

"We in Sinn Féin believe that the growth and development of a thriving all-Ireland economy is the best way to ensure a better outcome for everyone living in border areas."
