All Galway politicians need to take a stand for their constituents – Ó Clochartaigh
Sinn Féin Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh is calling on all elected representatives in Galway to stand behind the people of Galway and Ireland in opposing the water charges.
Ó Clochartaigh says:
“TD’s, Senators. MEP’s and Councillors representing Galway, who say they do not agree with water charges and the way Irish Water is imposing them should withdraw their support for the Government parties, or any voting pacts that support them, until they get a commitment from them that the water charges will be scrapped.
“The huge turnout at protests across the country is a clear message to politicians to listen to the citizens who are saying that this tax is unfair and that far too many people cannot afford to pay for water charges.
“The time for posturing is over. Government representatives must send a clear message to Fine Gael & the Labour party that enough is enough.
“Fianna Fáil members must call on their leadership to change their stated policy of supporting water charges in principle.
“So called ‘Independents’ who support council pacts which favour parties that are implementing these policies must put the people before their own selfish political ends and withdraw support from them unless the policies are changed.
“Sinn Féín have made an unambiguous commitment to scrap these unfair and inequitable charges if we are in government.
“The people have taken to the streets to say that they do not accept these charges in practice or in principle.
“Galway politicians of all hues are being given the opportunity to stand with their constituents, or with the political parties who are implementing these punishing charges. The choice is theirs, but they should stand with the people who elected them."
