Belfast Sinn Féin welcome withholding of funding for bonfire breaches

4 November, 2014

Belfast Sinn Féin Good Relations Councillor Caoimhín Mac Giolla Mhín has tonight welcomed the penalties imposed on Bonfire organisers for breaches of rules on burning of flags and other paraphernalia.

Six out of eight groups were deemed to have breached the rules governing the initiative and tonight Council voted to penalise the groups to the tune of 30% of their overall funding.

Speaking after the vote Cllr Mac Giolla Mhín said: "Sinn Féin has challenged the mis-use of this programme for a number of years now.

"The burning of any country's flag or the poster of any election candidate cannot be deemed to be any kind of positive expression of culture. As such, this Council made the right decision tonight in penalising the groups involved.

"All parties have agreed to review the Bonfire programme for next year and ongoing breaches set a negative context for such a review. Sinn Féin will not tolerate such an approach to cultural expression being funded by our City's ratepayers."
