Minister must set out timetable for Derry Coleraine railway upgrade

4 November, 2014 - by Cathal Ó hOisín

Sinn Féin MLA Cathal Ó hOisín has said the Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy must state categorically when the upgrade to the Derry Coleraine line will proceed.

 Mr Ó hOisín said,

“The minister has serious questions to answer why the current estimate for the upgrade of the Derry Coleraine line is nearly double the Translink figures.

“The minister must also state if the upgrade of the Coleraine to Belfast line will also be affected by under estimation and will face similar delays.

“This is a major failure on behalf of the Department and Translink and we need to know who is accountable for the massive under estimation of the cost of the upgrade.

“The incompetence of failure to procure proper signalling equipment and now the near doubling of the cost of the project needs to be addressed and people held to account.

“The upgrade of the Derry to Belfast railway line is an important infrastructural project. It is part of the Programme for Government so the minister must now clearly set out a timetable for the completion of the line.”
