Sandra McLellan TD welcomes Dublin City Council Moore Street vote

4 November, 2014

Sinn Féin spokesperson for Arts and Heritage, Sandra McLellan TD, has today welcomed the decision by Dublin City Council to vote against a proposed land swap deal with Chartered Land that would have seen most of the Moore Street terrace demolished.

Deputy McLellan said:

“I am pleased with the decision of Dublin City Council to vote against the proposed land swap deal.

“Moore Street is a site of incredible and profound historic relevance to the foundation of this state. It has been treated shamefully by successive Ministers. The commercialisation of the area would be a huge mistake and an affront to our history.

“A full and independent battlefield site survey must now be carried out.

“Just like with the development of the IFSC and Temple Bar, we need government intervention. It is long overdue on this matter.

“I am calling on Minister Heather Humphreys to immediately bring together all concerned parties to come up with a new, regenerated plan to best protect, preserve and develop this invaluable and historic quarter in Dublin City.”
