Government must be held to account for Irish Water fiasco - Cullinane
Sinn Féin’s David Cullinane has called for an extended debate on water charges. Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s debate in the Seanad on Irish Water, Senator Cullinane said:
“The government’s handling of Irish Water and its response to the concerns of the public has been an unmitigated disaster.
“Even more alarming is its response to the recent nationwide protests where over a hundred thousand people marched to voice their objections to this regressive tax.
“The government plan is to continue to tinker and fiddle with this dysfunctional entity.
“What don’t Fine Gael and Labour get?
“Back in December 2013 when the Bill was going through the Seanad, Sinn Féin submitted amendments, none of which were accepted by the government.
“These addressed key issues such as privatization, charges, etc., which have come back to haunt the government.
“People have had seven years of austerity and they are not prepared to take any more.
“They believe in fairness and equality but there is nothing fair about Irish Water
“As the Sinn Féin leader in the Seanad I am calling for a frank, constructive and full debate on Irish Water.
“Enough is enough, as elected representatives we must hold the government to account for this fiasco”.
