Labour oppose rent control & social housing - Cllr Críona Ní Dhálaigh

5 November, 2014

Speaking after the recent City Council  meeting Ní Dhalaigh said:

"This city’s housing crisis is a priority for Sinn Féin. We must ensure that any housing plan for the city meets the needs of its citizens not the needs of developers. For far too long the market was driven by tax breaks for developers, this has created profits for some and misery for many others.”

"The plan agreed by council will allow council management to seek expressions of interest from developers for certain pieces of council land. Sinn Féin has sought and received agreement  to ensure that there will be a social clause in all successful tenders. This will provide jobs and training for the local community. We have also ensured that the Strategic Policy Committee on housing will be central to any discussions on potential housing developments.”

“The public will be disappointed that the Labour Party choose to oppose Sinn Fein's amendments on rent control and our proposals to maximise social and affordable housing. Labour seems to be reverting back to the failed policy of public private partnerships, which has failed to provide sufficient housing for this city.”

“Sinn Féin will not allow a return to these dark days. We will continue to campaign and negotiate for a housing solution based on the needs of our citizens.”
