Ní Riada calls for EU support for Irish Fishermen
Speaking from Brussels today, Sinn Féin MEP Liadh Ní Riada has called on the EU to provide security and support to Seafarers during a meeting of the European Parliaments Fisheries Committee.
Liadh Ní Riada, who is the only MEP from Ireland currently representing the Irish fishing industry on the Committee, stated:
"If we are to achieve any sort of 'blue growth', then administrative burdens on fishermen need to be reduced.
"I will be delivering an 'Opinion' on the Seafarers Report which deals with workers conditions in the industry and I believe that there is scope there to suggest changes and amendments which will benefit in particular the smaller scale fisheries.
"We need to be providing more in the areas of training, research, education, health and safety promotion as well as entrepreneurship and innovation.
"The fishing industry in Ireland is severely under supported despite contributing enormously to our economy on a local and National level.
"It is also an industry where there is a rapid decline in younger people making a living from it.
Ní Riada also spoke on the need for the EU to differentiate between small and large fishing enterprises.
"A small family owned fishing boat has no chance of competing with the larger deep sea fishing fleets.
"We must come up with mechanisms to differentiate between these very different fishing enterprises.
"It is ridiculous to expect our small rural fishing communities to follow identical rules and regulations of large corporate fleets"
