Anti-poverty strategy must be produced - Maskey

6 November, 2014 - by Alex Maskey

Sinn Féin MLA and member of the OFMdFM committee Alex Maskey has said an anti-poverty strategy with clear and measurable outcomes must be produced.

Speaking today Mr Maskey said:

“There is clearly a pressing need for the delivery of an anti-poverty strategy. Poverty and the growing numbers of those being pushed into poverty by Tory policies is a very real concern.

“Sinn Féin have been on record stating that there are outstanding issues from both the Good Friday and St Andrews Agreements and this unfortunately is one that has not been addressed adequately.

“There are other parties who will not allocate or target resources on the basis of objective need. This is the most direct way of challenging poverty.

“Rather their approach is one of targeting specific communities. There is a very real perception that the development of a definitive strategy is being held back on a sectarian basis.

“Tackling poverty is a key element of the both St Andrews agreement and the Programme for Government. An Anti-poverty strategy must be produced to provide clear and measurable outcomes in tackling this scourge in society.”
