McElduff calls on Western Trust to abandon ward merger plans

6 November, 2014 - by Barry McElduff

Sinn Féin MLA Barry McElduff has called on the Western Trust to abandon plans to merge palliative care and rehabilitation wards at Tyrone County Hospital in Omagh.

The West Tyrone MLA said;

"The Western Trust's proposal to merge the palliative care ward in Omagh with a rehabilitation ward is insensitive and ill-thought out and should be abandoned.

"By its nature, the palliative care ward provides end-of-life care and comfort to patients and their families at a very sensitive time.

"Similarly, the rehabilitation ward provides care to patients facing very challenging circumstances.

"It is insensitive to propose merging these two wards as both sets of patients, and their families, have very different needs and requirements.

"I have tabled an Assembly question to the health minister asking him to ensure that this does not go ahead.

"I will also be meeting, along with my MLA colleagues from West Tyrone, Derry and Fermanagh, the senior management of the Western Trust to discuss this.

"The intervention from an interdenominational group of hospital chaplains who have appealed for this proposal to be dropped is also welcome."
