Effective regulation needed for private rental sector - McCann
Sinn Féin MLA Fra McCann has said a review of private rental sector accommodation must result in effective regulation to protect the rights of tenants.
Speaking after a meeting of the Social Development committee, the West Belfast MLA said;
"The review of private rental sector accommodation announced today is welcome and something Sinn Féin has called for some time.
"The current regulations are clearly ineffective and need to be reviewed to include effective regulation to protect the rights of tenants and to make landlords responsible for their dwellings.
"The private rented sector receives huge amounts of public funding for rents through housing benefits and must be accountable to ensure the quality of the housing provided.
"At the moment social housing is provided by the the Housing Executive and housing associations, as well as the private rental sector.
“However, political will is required on the best way to plan how housing is provided for the next 20 years to ensure that need is addressed and that homes fit for purpose are built.”
