Carthy to Question ECB in light of Trichet Letters
Commenting today on the content of the Trichet letters revealed this week, Sinn Féin MEP Matt Carthy has said the ECB has serious questions to answer on their actions towards Ireland.
“I intend to hold the ECB to account as a Sinn Féin MEP and as a member of the European Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee on this issue.
“A number of questions need to be answered in relation to this matter, namely, the legality of the approach taken by the ECB towards Ireland, particularly in setting down conditions for providing Emergency Liquidation to Irish Banks. Questions also need to be answered as to why this information has been kept secret until now and the attitude of the ECB to the Irish Banking Inquiry.
“I also have serious concerns around the approach of the Fianna Fáil Government at the time and the role that they played in the run up to the bailout.
“I believe the content of these letters can now be used to strengthen our hand in seeking retrospective Recapitalisation of the Pillar Banks. This Government has allowed itself to be bullied by the ECB in much the same manner as the Fianna Fáil administration with devastating consequences for Irish citizens.
“I intend to submit a number of questions to the ECB surrounding the specific issues arising from the Trichet letters this week in order to seek clarity on behalf of the irish people and to hold the ECB to account for its actions.”
