Huge untapped potential in all-Ireland student mobility - Hazzard
Sinn Féin MLA Chris Hazzard has said that more must be done to realise the huge potential in all-Ireland student mobility.
Speaking at a North South Inter-Parliamentary meeting in Seanad Éireann, the South Down MLA called for a "cross-border collaborative approach" to overcoming the existing barriers.Mr Hazzard said:
"In the years since the Good Friday Agreement there has been an acceptance that student mobility throughout the island of Ireland is not what it should be.
"Issues with qualification equivalency, unfamiliarity with the application processes and institutional inflexibility has resulted in far too few students exploring study options throughout Ireland.
"I was encouraged that all political voices were speaking in unison today regarding the need to break down these barriers and seek ways to encourage greater student mobility.
"We agreed that we must see increased promotion, inventive student & staff pilot schemes and even an island wide scholarship project.
"As we look to build a strong and equitable all Ireland economy it will be vital that our young people have maximum access to educational development across the island."
