DUP councillor disrespectful to Irish speakers - Catherine Seeley
Craigavon Deputy Mayor, Cllr Catherine Seeley, has described a Facebook post by a DUP councillor in the borough as disgraceful and disrespectful.
And the Sinn Fein councillor said she has made aware complaints about the post by DUP Councillor Carla Lockhart on social media.
Catherine Seeley said:
“The post on Councillor Lockhart’s page actually is an image of Gregory Campbell’s insulting remarks about the Irish language earlier this week in the Assembly.
"Councillor Lockhart's post is hugely disappointing and disrespectful to Irish speakers in this borough and in my opinion it borders on racism.
“Mocking anyone’s language or cultural identity is wrong. Councillors are leaders in this community and, as such, those we represent expect us to show tolerance and mutual respect for all.
“Our code of conduct embodies many noteworthy principles including respect, leadership and the promotion of good relations.
“There is absolutely no excuse for her behaviour. In my view Councillor Lockhart’s actions are in breach of this code.
“I will be reporting Councillor Lockhart to both councils as well as to the North's Commissioner for Complaints.
“The behavior of Gregory Campbell and some of his DUP colleagues towards the Irish language this week demonstrates again that the British government must honour its commitment to an Acht na Gaeilge.”
