Government must intervene to ensure Childline services are not cut – Sandra McLellan TD
Sinn Féin Cork East TD Sandra McLellan has called on the government to immediately intervene to ensure that Childline’s night-time service is not forced to close due to a €1.2 million funding shortfall.
Deputy McLellan said:
“In light of the commitment in the Programme for Government to ‘fundamentally reform the delivery of child protection services’, it is the duty of this government to intervene and ensure that Childline’s vital night-time service is not closed due to funding shortages.
“Last week the charity issued an appeal for €1.2 million. It is exclusively funded by public donations. Yesterday I raised this issue in the Dáil with the Taoiseach and today I am reiterating my call for government intervention.
“Childline has said that 11% of the calls it receives are to its night-time service. The closure of this service would mean that the 11% of children who call in for support will go unheard. This simply cannot be allowed.
“Childline is the only support option available for many children in desperate need.
“It is a sad indictment on this government that Childline would be forced to close any of its vital services due to its austerity driven agenda that has taken money from the pockets of people all across this state.
“It is time for Fine Gael and Labour to take responsibility for this.
“This government has failed to protect the state’s most vulnerable citizens both young and old.
“I am calling for immediate intervention in this matter.
“Government must act now.”
