Equality and parity of esteem central to peace process success – Ní Riada

12 November, 2014 - by Liadh Ní Riada MEP

Sinn Féin MEP for Ireland South Liadh Ní Riada has said that equality and parity of esteem are essential to the continuing progress the peace process. Speaking before the European Parliament voted on a resolution on the peace process Ní Riada spoke of the hope the process generated abroad, but noted that outstanding issues still needed to be addressed.

Liadh Ní Riada said:

“The Irish peace is recognised and is held up as a beacon of hope for other places around the world, particularly for those who are looking to resolve their own conflicts.

“Despite the fantastic progress that has been made there is a real need for this process to be strengthened. Outstanding issues and all parts of the agreements need to be addressed.

“It is about time that Acht na Gaeilge were introduced especially after the mockery that was recently made of our native language. It just shows the lack of understanding and the ignorance in relation to the importance of culture and the need for equality and parity of esteem to be at the centre of our society.

“It was extremely regrettable for us that Richard Hass´ proposals were not accepted as this was a real attempt to come to a compromise on some of those issues.

“Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has already mentioned that the European Union has been a source of support for the peace process. I am confident that with the continued support of the Parliament we can move forward together, to strengthen this process and to build a hopeful future for everyone on the island of Ireland.”

Comhionannas agus paireacht mheasa ag teastáil ón próiseas síochána – Ní Riada

Dúirt an Feisire Eorpach d e chuid Shinn Féin Liadh Ní Riada go raibh comhionannas agus paireacht mheasa riachtachach chun an próiseas síochána a chur chun cinn.

Ag labhairt sa Pharlaimint roimh vóta ar moladh ag tacú leis an bpróiseas, labhair Ní Riada mar gheall ar an dóchas a mhusclaíonn próiseas síochána na hÉireann ar fud an domhan, ach comh maith tuigtear go bhfuil ceisteann fós le réitiú.

Dúirt Liadh Ní Riada:

“Athnaítear an phróiséas síochána i dTuaisceart na hÉireann ar fud an domhain. Is próiséas inspioráideach agus dóchasach é go háirtihe dóibh siúd a bhfuil ag déanamh iarracht a gcoimhlint féin a réiteach.

“Cé go bhfuil dul cun cinn ollmhór déanta tá gá ann an próiséas seo a neartú. Caithfear deileáil le na rudaí nach bhfuil réitithe agus aghaidh a thabhairt ar ghach gnéith de na comhaontuithe éagsúla.

“Tá sé thar a bheith am Acht na Gaeilge a thabhairt isteach ach go háirithe, tar éis éisteacht leis an maslú a rinneadh ar ár dteanga dúchasach. Léiríonn sé an easpa tuiscint agus aineolachas ó thaobh tábhacht ár gcultúr. Caithfear comhionannas a bheith lárnach.

“Ba chúis áifeála é dúinn nár ghlacadh le tograí Richard Hass mar gur iarracht a bhí ann teacht ar chomhréiteach. Ach le tacaíocht Parlaimint na hEorpa táim muiníneach go féidir linn bogadh ar aghaidh le chéil agus todhchaí dóchasach a chruthú do ghach aon duine ar oileáin na hÉireann san am atá romhainn.”
