Latest homeless figures extremely worrying

13 November, 2014 - by Fra McCann

Sinn Féin MLA and Housing Spokesperson Fra McCann has said the latest housing figures released by the Department of Social Development make difficult reading.

 Mr McCann said,

“Between April and June 2014, 4,623 people are listed as being homeless, which is an increase of 3% on the previous quarter.

“This is totally unacceptable, as having a home is a basic human right and the minister needs to act now if we are to reduce this figure.

“It has become obvious that unless the Minister embarks on a major house building scheme then these figures will increase year upon year.

“Sinn Féin have told the Minister that they would support any bid for additional finance to deal with can only be classed as a crisis in social housing provision.”

“I am also concerned these figures do not reflect an accurate picture of just how many people are actually homeless.

“Out of 4,623 who presented as homeless only 2,221 were accepted on the homeless list.

“So the minister needs to provide a breakdown of why this is the case and what happened to those who were turned away.” ENDS/CRÍÓCH
