Carthy welcomes progress after Beef Talks
Speaking today after progress was made on weights and specification issues in the roundtable beef discussions last night, Sinn Féin MEP for the Midlands North West Constituency Matt Carthy commended farmers on their resolve and determination in campaigning on this issue.
“I welcome the progress that was made on important issues to do with specification, including the reinstatement of the Quality Payment System, weight limits and a new incentive payment for Quality Assurance from the start of next year.
“The reinstatement of a single base price per factory for steers and heifers under the Quality Payment System will be a particularly welcome relief for farmers.
“It is unfortunate that the conduct of meat processors has led to a complete breakdown of the relationship with farmers and I hope the initiatives agreed upon last night will now be implemented without delay by the processors in an effort to restore trust and goodwill between stakeholders for the mutual benefit of all concerned.
“It is clear from what was agreed last night that there was significant scope for meat processors to address the concerns of farmers and it is regrettable that it took such a largescale protest by farmers to compel the processors to act reasonably.
“The beef protest, undertaken as a last resort by farmers whose backs have been pushed to the wall for too long, clearly exposed the unfairness and lack of transparency engaged in by meat processors and I commend them on their success in progressing this issue.”
