DRD minister must do more to prevent flooding - Mickey Brady

13 November, 2014 - by Mickey Brady

Sinn Féin Newry & Armagh MLA Mickey Brady has said regional development minister Danny Kennedy needs to manage his budget better to prevent flooding.

Mickey Brady made his comments after huge areas throughout Newry and Armagh were affected by flooding today. Mickey Brady said:

"The flooding across many parts of Newry and Armagh has caused serious hardship to people as well as traffic chaos as driving conditions have become extremely dangerous.

“The regional development minister Danny Kennedy made cuts to flood prevention measures such as cleaning gullies and drains and keeping them free from leaves.

“He was warned then that this was a false economy and tonight’s flooding is testament to that. He must look again at how he is managing his budget.

“Given the dangerous road conditions I urge people to travel only if necessary and those concerned about flooding should call the 24-hour helpline on 0300 2000 100.”
