Brian Hayes out of Touch- Lynn Boylan MEP

17 November, 2014 - by Senator Lynn Boylan

Dublin Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan has called into question Brian Hayes’ comments that the strong calls for a referendum on water ownership are “just a bit of theatre”.

Speaking from Dublin today on the issue Lynn Boylan said:

“Enshrining access to clean water in our constitution and protecting this access for future generations is hardly a bit of theatre, and I find Brian Hayes’s comments on this disconcerting to say the least.

Clearly he is out of touch in Europe if he thinks a referendum on the privatisation of water services is “bizarre and unwarranted”.

The European Commission has already received the European Citizens Initiative on the Right to Water, which contained 2 million signatures urging Europe to implement the human right to water and sanitation.

Over 90% of citizens in both Italy and Greece voted in referendums to ensure that water privatisation systems were not implemented. The Netherlands passed a law in 2004 banning private sector provision of water supply. Furthermore France is in the process of re-municipalising its water services due to transparency issues and rising costs.

What I find truly bizarre is this government’s reluctance to hold a referendum on water ownership. If there are no plans for the privatisation of Irish Water then what are they afraid of?"
