Sinn Féin MEPs welcome opportunity for consultation on European Commission

27 October, 2004

Speaking today after incoming European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso postponed the parliamentary vote on his proposed Commission, Sinn Féin MEPs Bairbre de Brún (6 Counties) and Mary Lou McDonald (Dublin)welcomed the decision.

In a joint statement both MEPs said:

"Sinn Féin welcomes today's decision by Mr Barroso to postpone the election of the incoming European Commission. During recent days it had become increasingly clear that there were serious difficulties across the political spectrum with the proposed European Commission.

"Sinn Féin now calls upon Mr Barroso to seriously reflect on the events of recent weeks. He must consult widely with MEPs and political groups on the composition of the future European Commission, and he must return to the EU Parliament next month with a more balanced and progressive set of proposals."ENDS
