Water charges protests need to be family friendly and safe

17 November, 2014 - by David Cullinane TD

Sinn Féin Senator David Cullinane has said all protests against water charges should be family friendly and safe.

Senator Cullinane has said heavy-handed tactics are wrong and counter-productive to the campaign against water charges.

Speaking from Leinster House this afternoon the Waterford Senator said;

“Mass mobilisation against the water charges is working.  The government is in crisis on the back of this revolt by ordinary people.

“The government’s response has been an attempt to demonise those attending and running the protests in the hope that they will scare off many people from attending future protests.

“Any kind of heavy-handed tactics from protesters only plays into the government strategy regardless of the fact that only a tiny fraction of protesters have engaged in this type of activity.

“Violence and intimidation have no place at these protests.  They are wrong and counter-productive to the campaign against water charges.

“We need maximum numbers at the next National mobilisation on December 10th at Leinster House.  Therefore the protests need to be family friendly and safe to help us achieve our goal, the complete abolition of water charges.”
