Warm Home Discount scheme needs to be extended to the North
Sinn Féin MLA Oliver McMullan has said that the poorest pensioners are missing out on £140 towards their energy bills, as the Warm Home Discount does not apply to the North.
Mr McMullan said,
“Pensioners in England Scotland and Wales can apply for a Warm Home Discount from their energy suppliers yet the scheme has not been extended to the North despite the fact that the North has the highest levels of fuel poverty.
“The discount, which is paid in the form of a rebate has operated in Britain since April 2011 yet pensioners here have missed out with many being forced to sit out the winter months in freezing conditions.
“Coldness is a contributing factor to the death of 500 pensioners each year and pensioners have consistently highlighted fuel poverty as their biggest worry in recent surveys.
“I will now be raising the matter in the Assembly in order to have this scheme extended to the North so that low income pensioners here will have access to extra finance in order to heat their homes this winter.”
