PSNI museum should surrender up Casement pistol – McMullan
Sinn Féin MLA Oliver McMullan has said a pistol which belonged to Roger Casement should be returned to Dublin for use in the 1916 centenary celebrations.
Speaking after the PSNI museum refused a request to allow the pistol to be displayed in Dublin during the centenary celebrations, the East Antrim MLA said;
"Roger Casement played a key role in the events surrounding the 1916 Easter Rising and that role will be commemorated during the upcoming centenary.
"The PSNI museum has a pistol which belonged to Roger Casement. I asked them to return it to Dublin so it can be displayed in a museum there during the 1916 centenary celebrations.
"I am very disappointed that they have refused to do so.
"In refusing, the curator of the museum cited the rules of the historical society and the fact the pistol has not been deactivated.
"These are simple issues, which could be easily sorted out if there was a will to do so.
"I am calling on the PSNI museum to review this decision and allow this important piece of our history to be included in the 1916 centenary celebrations."
